138th Running of the Roses Marks the 35th Anniversary of Seattle Slew’s Triple Crown Win

Back on the First Saturday in May 1977, Seattle Slew began his historic run to win the Triple Crown with his Kentucky Derby victory at Churchill Downs in Louisville.  Jockey Jean Cruguet rode Seattle Slew to a 1 and ¾ lengths win over Run Dusty Run.  Seattle Slew is still the only undefeated Triple Crown winner.

Now in 2012, we celebrate that great Triple Crown win.  Jean Cruguet will return to Churchill Downs as a Celebrity Handicapper. Cruguet will interact with race fans, and provide insights into races on both Oaks and Derby Days.

Jean Cruguet celebrates the 35th anniversary of his Triple Crown win atop Seattle Slew.

Cruguet is also expected to attend the “Night of… One Race, One Winner, One Party” in support of Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.  The party, thrown by the Galt House Hotel, hopes to raise $100,000 for the organization that provides financial assistance for jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries.  The money will be raised in part through ticket sales, as well as an auction.  The auction offers one-of-a-kind Kentucky Derby memorabilia up for grabs, including a jockey boot signed by the jockeys riding in the 138th Kentucky Derby.  Also in the auction is a guitar autographed by country music superstar Toby Keith, and an autographed Red Solo Cup.

The “Night of… One Race, One Winner, One Party” on May 5, 2012 at 8 p.m.  To purchase tickets, call The Kentucky Center at 502-584-7777 or visit kentuckycenter.org.  For groups of 10 or more contact Dee Asher at dasher@galthotel.com or (502)588-4045.
